Guitar Notes Master is an interactive software that is designed to help guitarists master their instrument. It was created on the premise that many guitarists have learned to play by sheer rote memorization, without fully understanding the basis of what they are doing. Hence, they eventually become limited to what they can actually play, despite having many years of experience. The question now is whether this program actually teaches different things than the traditional guitar tabs or sheet music, and whether it actually brings results. These are what we will examine in this Guitar Notes Master review.
Let us first examine the content. The software contains three learning modules, taking the guitarist through the entire scope of guitar fretboard theory, or those concepts which allow notes, chords and scales to be played on a fretboard. The first module contains the basic lessons, which focuses on note recognition, pattern recognition, and pattern completion. It is very interactive, and cures the main problem of fretboard mastery not knowing the corresponding notes for each string, on each fret, by heart. The guitarist will definitely not finish this module without a thorough understanding of those notes.
The second module contains the practice lessons. It builds upon the first module by forcing the guitarist to remember how those patterns were created, and then transferring them onto a virtual fretboard. By doing these practice sessions regularly, the program hopes to establish a very solid understanding of guitar theory, to such a point that the guitarist can make his or her own patterns that will play the same notes in the same way. This feature is further enhanced in module three, where a practice sheet can be custom created from all the previous lessons, and then printed, so they can be practiced on an actual guitar.
Guitar Notes Master has two big merits – it saves on time and breaks down conventional methods of learning guitar. It does this by enabling a player to learn without having to bring the guitar all the time, and by teaching lessons without a time limit (so they can be practiced at work, for example). It also achieves its goals by teaching that the guitar is not simply a collection of chords and mindless patterns, but a group of notes that can be modified at will to play any kind of music. The interactive lessons help maintain interest in the program, making it seem like one entertaining game, and removes a lot of the frustrations in learning.
However, the program is not without its limitations. It clearly demonstrates the need for dedication and practice, and the mental stress of the relearning process is entirely up to the guitarist to handle. Some tediousness is inevitably encountered with its methods. The entire program also requires a computer to be brought along, something that not everybody currently has. And even when they do, the software would only run on a PC which has Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. Therefore, the software is quite good, but Mac users would have to turn elsewhere for similar lessons.
