Speak Ukulele is a musical training course created by Nick Night, a celebrity entertainer who also goes by the name “Beatnik”. It is an interactive software program currently on its second version, the Speak Ukulele 2, which is downloadable from Nick Night’s site for a fee of $39.97. There is one major goal for this software, and that is to teach individuals the “right” way of playing the ukulele. And since its release, it has gathered quite a bit of following, which is more than enough to see how the whole system works.
Speak Ukulele 2 focuses on mastery of the chords. It does this through 3 expertise levels ranging from Beginner to Expert, with each level tackling the appropriate chord recognition and chord training exercises. Upon opening the software, one is brought to a menu containing 4 tutorial videos and 3 main courses: the GCAE tuner, the fretboard audio map, and the main stage. Of particular importance is one of the tutorial videos, the Play By Ear Mode. Here is where a person’s chord recognition skills is actually tested. On the main courses, the Main Stage is equally vital. Here, the actual learning of how to play the chords takes place, through fingering diagrams, audio and visual cues, as well as chord filtering options.
Another notable feature of this software is the way it lets individuals practice with those chords. Aside from the Play By Ear and the Main Stage, there are also options to create a chord list, as well as the ability to set up a looping pattern of chords. What all of this does is to enable the targeting of difficult chords, and playing them over and over until they are mastered. And by means of the chord list, a person can literally create a custom lesson, as a form of finger exercise until the patterns are locked into muscle memory.
The overall claim of this software is that it will teach the person to speak the language of the Ukulele. And it delivers on this claim quite satisfactorily. Any good training program has to be applicable to a person’s skill level, wherever it may be. And a good music program has to combine both theory and hands-on practice in a user-friendly manner. There should also be a venue to allow the trainee to apply what was learned. Thanks to the excellent structure and layout of the interface, all the issues above are adequately handled.
In the end, the software provides a good deal, whether for the novice or the expert. The overall approach is probably as simple as any Ukulele teaching program is likely to get, and so it will be hard to find a similar program that is significantly better at teaching the instrument. However, as of the moment, that instrument remains as a niche in the market, and even the program is unlikely to convert a lot of people into instant fans. But for those who are already playing it, this program is about as good as it gets.
